OUR STORY
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg’s mission focuses on exactly what our community is asking for. We are here to address the consequences and end the cycle of poverty in Greater Lynchburg. We opened our doors on December 9, 2005 and in one year the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg has registered 204 members. We have had over 20,000 visits to the Club. The 2007-2008 after school program has registered 75 regular members and averages 60 kids a day at an 85% retention rate. We wish to serve and we are working on finding spots for over 40 youth on our waiting list. The Teen Center opened March 2008 and now serves over 20 teens ages 13 - 18 daily. Our program goal is to serve 100 youth daily by the end of 2008. Not so long ago the kids we serve were on the street and today The Club offers them a clean, safe and fun place to learn and grow. During the school year the staff is here 5 days a week from 2:00 pm until 7:30 pm to offer our members a snack, homework help programs, technology skill programs, recreation and consistent care. We run a 9 week Summer Program which gives kids a positive place to be from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm 5 days a week. By keeping the kids engaged and thinking all year long we eliminate the educational gap that so often handicaps our youth during the summer months. Our goal is to make learning fun for the kids that need us most and that often times do not have a chance to participate after school or recreational programs due to their families income levels and/or work schedules. We have noticed that one of the key problems is literacy. A summer without reading and a school year without comprehention leads to behavior problems and low self-esteem.
We also provide a food program with two meals a day because hungry kids can not concentrate on anything else. In January 2007 we qualified for Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) without a sight search because of our location in the College Hill Neighborhood. In the 24504 area over 60% of the children in public school qualified for the Free Lunch Program.
We have over 50 proven programs we can cater to each member as we work for our mission. Our goals are growth, character development, program improvement and stability. We have become the cornerstone of youth development in the Greater Lynchburg community and will continue to strive for outstanding service for many years to come. BOARD OF DIRECTORS HONORARY BOARD
